But How Do We Design an App That Becomes a Habit?

Here’s a gist of my Process, Step by Step

USER RESEARCH

Every Runner Starts Strong—But Why Do They Stop?

To understand why runners often lose motivation over time, I turned to secondary research—exploring behavioral studies, fitness reports, and articles on habit formation.

Research Approach

Reviewed online articles and fitness behavior reports (Strava, Fitbit, Psychology Today)

Studied patterns in habit formation and exercise motivation

Analyzed user reviews of top fitness/running apps

Data Highlights

73% of new Strava users stop logging activity within the first month

People who varied their running routes were 50% more likely to maintain consistency

Repetition and lack of novelty were cited as top reasons for burnout in Reddit & app reviews

Users described journaling and storytelling as more fulfilling than chasing PRs or badges

IDEATION

Brainstorming ways to keep the Runners going

Using Nir Eyal’s Habit loop

Sorting Needs from Wants: MoSCoW Prioritization
